Alberta Liberals propose community hubs instead of overcrowded schools

EDMONTON, AB (October 15, 2014): Donna Wilson, the Alberta Liberal candidat=
e in Edmonton-Whitemud, says Alberta students deserve better than rundown, =
overcrowded schools from the PC government.

"Schools are the backbone of vibrant communities," says Wilson. "This PC go=
vernment has proven itself incapable not only of building schools with the =
capacity that communities need, but of realizing the full potential of what=
a school can be, which is a community hub.

Wilson says too many schools in Whitemud are bursting at the seams, and tem=
porary fixes such as portable classrooms are a highly visible reminder of t=
he government=E2=80=99s lack of planning and foresight.

"The Alberta Liberals propose schools as community hubs with a public libra=
ry, gyms, a medical clinic, and the all-important playground," says Wilson.=
=E2=80=9CThe Alberta Liberal plan would not only provide better educationa=
l facilities for our kids. It would make schools social hubs and provide be=
tter access to primary care for all residents.=E2=80=9D

Liberals are also calling for an end to basic school fees, which are nothin=
g but a tax on education, and for full-day kindergarten to be fully funded.

"Alberta has the lowest high-school completion and post-secondary participa=
tion rates in Canada," says Wilson. "It shouldn't be this way. We're the ri=
chest province. We can afford the best, and given how hard we work, we dese=
rve the best.

The Alberta Liberals are campaigning on the message that it is time for Alb=
erta to have both a strong economy AND a strong society. This means policy =

What surprised me was the statement "Alberta has the lowest high-school
completion and post-secondary participation rates in Canada".
Does that mean having riches and low taxes doesn't translate into having a
smart population? {>_<}
