PETLAND IN SHAWNESSY????

Well, I am totally in shock and disbelief!!! I visited the Petland in
Shawnessy tonight to inquire about a kitten to add to my family. We
played with them and along with another lady, talked about them with
one of the workers. Well, didn't we get thrown once we found out what
they were asking for pricewise. Now, you have to remember, these are
kittens that were rescued from some area of Calgary with the threat of
being killed and were just abandoned. They DO NOT come with much, only
vet checked and first shots, they don't even know for sure how old
they are and they wanted $288.00 for these kittens that they received
for nothing. WOW.....I won't ever go back there to shop. I ended up
going to PetCetera and I now have a beautiful kitten. For $135.00, I
have a 3 month old male kitten that has been neutered, got his shots,
been tattooed and microchipped. I can not believe that PETLAND can get
away with charging such outrageous prices for these animals, I guess
now we know why there are so many cats and dogs left there for so
long, they have to be put down. Words that came out of the salesladies
mouth at Petland!!!!!

Just my little soundoff, thanks for listening Calgary.

P.S. All animals that are adopted from PetCetera are registered with
the Calgary Humane Society too!!!!! Keep up the GREAT job PETCETERA.

Petsmart also adopts out Humane Society cats for the same price, or on
Saturdays you can adopt cats from the 'Feline Rescue Federation of
Alberta' (FRFA) at Petsmart. Also the Greyhound rescue group are there
on Saturdays too with several ex-racers for adoption.

What I can't get over is that they sell "mut" dogs for $800 and people pay
this!!!!
You don't know anything about the dog; parent's temperment, if it came from
a puppy mill, and they don't offer any kind of guarantee.
We got a purebreed for $550, with papers, and we got to meet the parents....
also came with a 1 year health gurantee.

The problem with the humane society is that they rarely have any kittens....
and they are VERY fussy about where the animals go.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your kitten, and I totally understand why you
wanted to voice the complaint.... it's crazy to pay that much!!

When we were looking for a dog we looked at Petland first and they couldn't
tell us anything about where the dogs.... for $800 bucks I want to know the
history... so we found a nice breeder.
We have gotten a "rescue" cat from the same Petland.... (I fell in love the
second I saw her) and I think she was about $180.... which I thought was
cheap compared to the $400 cats/kittens that they also had there.
Our first cat was free from the paper.... so I guess it all comes down to
what you are willing to spend once you find the animal that you fall in love
with.
Now that I know about the Meow foundation, any future cats we get will be
from there.... wonderful and dedicated volunteers.... you gotta get their
beds for your animals.... they are soooo comfy!! Both our cats and dog use
them.

It's true. I have had a few friends in the past that worked for
Petland and it's not exactly roses. I go once a month or so for bird
stuff and they never seem to have the same staff :\

Pet stores that sell cats and dogs are pet stores that I stay away from,
with the exception of the ones that deal with the SPCA/Humane society.
I was in Petland once and asked about a dog they had there. It was
(supposedly) a purebred Australian Cattle dog and was selling for $1400
or so, but as soon as you asked about papers they said it was unregisterable.
In other words, it's from a puppy mill.

In fact, do a search for "petland puppy mill" on google, and prepare for a
LOT of reading.

Yes indeed. Petcetera and PetSmart DO NOT SELL ANIMALS! They act as an
'adoption branch office' of the humane society, providing more room aned
exposure for animals that are otherwise destined to be destroyed. Their
cost ($135, I believe) is exactly the same as you'll pay when you go to
the Humane society, and it covers shots, neutering, and a clean bill of
health.

Do not support Petland, or any other store that sells unregistered animals.

I'd also wonder what the dog is that you get from Petland... our neighbours
got a "bichon shihtzu" from petland.... but it turned out looking more like
a poodle crossed with something. Still a nice dog, but they wanted a small
dog, and got a medium/large sized one.

Probably the best place to look for kittens is the Calgary Bargain Finder.
There are always kittens being advertised, some even for free.

Pet shops are notorious for selling just about any animal for a whole lot
more than a kennel, private owner or breeder. For example, a standard gray
male chinchilla goes for anywhere from $40/$65 from a breeder or pet owner.
But a pet shop would sell the same animal for twice that, and claim not to
know any of the stats.

Personally I don't believe or understand why the pet shop wouldn't know the
specifics on the animals they sell. If they claim to get animals from
breeders around town, and I have heard them make this claim, the breeders
would want to make sure they had that information.

But pet shops don't want to tell the customers anything about or to do with
the breeders or owners that sold or gave up the animal to them. It might
encourage the customer to go to that breeder the next time they want to get
another animal.

http://www.buysell.com is a good place to look online for pets and supplies.

I completely agree. Petland sold me a puppy 9 years ago. She is a
Shephard/Malinois cross. I asked them what a Malinois was and they said its
a smaller dog, so she will end up being no higher than knee height. WELL,
after a few months, she was getting huge, so I looked up Malinois dogs -
turns out they are larger than Shephards by at least 4 inches. They are the
breed the RCMP use.
Needless to say, I had a very large dog due to misinformation from a pet
shop. Never again will I buy from one!!
When I was younger, we got 2 cats from the bargain finder. They were
already trained, had all their shots AND were free. Go that way!

Cats are always house trained, they just need to know where the dirt is.

Buyer beware! Do your homework before purchasing. Find a reputable breeder,
some insist on a thorough background check and an intense interview process!

Which rminds me that I saw the cutest puppie - part jack russel, cute cute cute!
at a pet store just the other day.

take care
